Apple has released a new software update for iOS and MacOS. For users of iPhones, iPads and Mac computers, downloading the patch is critical to avoiding a potential hacking. Notes:
- The Apple iPhone requires the latest approved software version. Installing other software versions (e.g. Beta versions, unapproved software versions, etc.) could cause issues with activation, apps and other device functionality.
- To verify the iTunes software version, refer to iTunes: How to find which version you are using for assistance.
- iOS updates can be either optional or automatic. The on-screen prompts of the iOS download, backup and update may vary.
Caution:
- Before performing an update, backup your iPhone using iCloud or iTunes.
- If the device fails to reboot after performing the iOS update (e.g., device freezes/hangs), perform the reset method.
- The iOS update process may take several minutes; don't interrupt while in progress.
- To avoid potential data costs, it's recommended to connect to a Wi-Fi network.
- The Cellular Data update method may not be available for all iPhone models for certain iOS updates.
- Depending upon the iOS file size, the update may require being performed using the Wi-Fi or iTunes update method and not the Cellular Data update method.
- If unable to perform the over-the-air (OTA) iOS update, perform update using the iTunes method or remove unneeded files to free up available memory.

iOS Update (iTunes)
To update the Apple iPhone 4 to iOS 7, iTunes version 11 must be installed on the computer prior to installing the update.
- From the computer, close any open apps.
- Press the Power button to power the iPhone on.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
When tethered, iTunes opens automatically on the computer. - In iTunes, select the iPhone under Devices in the left column.
For iTunes version 11 or higher, select the iPhone button in the upper right.
Refer to Install System Updates - iTunes if prompted to download the latest version of iTunes. - When prompted, click Download and Update.
If not prompted, click Check for Update first. - Click Update, click Next, review the License Agreement then click Agree.
- Once the update completes, tap Continue on the iPhone then select a Location Services option:.

- Disable Location Services
- Tap Skip This Step.

- Tap Get Started then tap Dismiss.

Verify the iPhone has a charge. If battery is drained, use provided AC adapter to charge for approximately 15 minutes.
- When prompted with an available software update, tap Details.
- Tap Download and Install, review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
- Tap Agree.
- If prompted, tap Continue.
If prompted, enter the existing passcode.
If prompted to create a passcode, enter a 4-digit passcode. - Tap Install, tap Install Now, review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
- Tap Agree.
- Once the software update verifies, slide the unlock switch right to unlock the device.

Ensure Wi-Fi is on if performing update via Wi-Fi.
- Press the Power button if device does not power on automatically.

- From the Home screen, tap Settings.
- Tap General, tap Software Update then tap Download and Install.
- Review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
- Tap Agree, then if prompted, tap Continue.
